The short answer: AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty Synthetic Diesel Oil is the right choice for most diesel pickup truck owners. The correct viscosity depends on your engine, climate, and how hard you work the truck. This page covers every major diesel truck application, Duramax, Powerstroke, and Cummins, with specific product recommendations and the data behind each one.
Diesel truck owners are some of the most research-driven buyers I work with. They know their engines, they track their maintenance, and they ask the right questions before putting anything in their truck. I respect that. I'm Ken Smith, owner of CleanEngine and an AMSOIL Authorized Independent Dealer since 2004. I'm Customer Certified, placing me in the top 6% of dealers nationwide. I hold a Civil Engineering degree from Auburn University and spent 27 years in the US Navy Reserve, where I worked with heavy equipment and understood firsthand what proper lubrication means under sustained load.
Over 20 years of recommending AMSOIL for diesel applications, I've helped fleet operators, independent contractors, and everyday diesel truck owners find the right product for their specific engine and use case. Here is what I recommend and why.
Why Diesel Trucks Need Different Oil Than Gas Engines
Diesel engines place fundamentally different demands on motor oil than gasoline engines. Understanding these demands explains why standard gas engine oil, even a quality synthetic, is not the right choice for a diesel truck.
Soot contamination. Diesel combustion produces soot as a normal byproduct. That soot enters the oil and accumulates over the drain interval. Oil formulated for diesel applications contains dispersants specifically engineered to keep soot particles suspended and separated so they don't clump into larger particles that cause abrasive wear on cylinder walls and bearings. Gas engine oil does not contain these dispersants at sufficient levels.
Higher operating temperatures and pressures. Diesel engines run at higher compression ratios and generate more combustion pressure than gas engines. This puts greater stress on the oil film between moving parts. The oil's ability to maintain viscosity under load, measured by HTHS viscosity per ASTM D5481 — is more critical in a diesel application than in a passenger car.
Turbocharger demands. Nearly every modern diesel pickup. Duramax, Powerstroke, and Cummins run one or more turbochargers operating at extreme temperatures. Turbo bearing housings routinely reach temperatures exceeding 1,000°F under load. Oil that degrades or cokes under heat causes deposit buildup on turbo bearings, restricting oil flow and accelerating turbo wear. AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty resists thermal breakdown better than conventional and competing synthetic diesel oils, keeping turbo surfaces clean under sustained high-temperature operation.
Extended drain requirements under severe service. Diesel trucks that tow regularly, haul heavy loads, or work in commercial applications are operating in severe service conditions. The oil must maintain its protective properties, viscosity stability, soot dispersancy, acid neutralization, over longer intervals under heavier loads than a standard passenger car application.
AMSOIL's Diesel Truck Product Lineup
AMSOIL offers two tiers of diesel motor oil: Signature Series Max-Duty and Heavy-Duty. Here is how they differ and which fits your situation.
Signature Series Max-Duty Synthetic Diesel Oil, Top Tier
This is AMSOIL's flagship diesel product. It delivers 6X more wear protection than required by the Detroit Diesel DD13 Scuffing Test for Specification DFS 93K222. In independent testing, it kept cylinder liners looking new while a leading conventional 15W-40 diesel oil produced severely scuffed liners under the same conditions.
Available viscosities for diesel pickup applications:
0W-40 - Best choice for cold climate operators and anyone prioritizing cold-start protection. Delivers 4X better cold-temperature performance than SAE 15W-40 in ASTM D5293 Cold Cranking Viscosity testing. If you start your diesel in sub-zero conditions or park outside overnight in cold climates, this is the viscosity that protects your engine during that critical cold-start window before oil pressure fully builds.
5W-40 - The most versatile Signature Series diesel viscosity. Provides the cold-weather and fuel-economy benefits of a 5W with the high-temperature film strength of an SAE 40. Appropriate for most diesel pickup applications across a wide range of operating temperatures. The sweet spot for year-round use in moderate to cold climates.
5W-30 - Matches Ford WSS-M2C214-B1 and GM dexosD specifications. Specifically appropriate for newer diesel applications that specify a 5W-30 viscosity. Delivers 6X more wear protection than required by the Detroit Diesel DD13 Scuffing Test.
10W-30 - Appropriate for moderate climates and steady workloads. Strong choice for fleet applications where consistent operating temperatures are predictable and 15W-40 is heavier than the engine requires.
15W-40 - The traditional diesel viscosity. Appropriate for warmer climates and operators accustomed to conventional diesel oil intervals who want to upgrade to synthetic protection without changing viscosity. Excellent for fleets converting from conventional 15W-40.
Heavy-Duty Synthetic Diesel Oil - Value Tier
AMSOIL Heavy-Duty Synthetic Diesel Oil provides 4X more engine protection than required by the Detroit Diesel DD13 specification - still significantly better than conventional diesel oil, at a more accessible price point. Available in 10W-30, 5W-40, and 15W-40. The right choice for diesel owners who want to move up from conventional oil without moving to the full Signature Series tier.
By Engine: Which AMSOIL Product for Your Truck
GM Duramax (6.6L L5P, LM2, LML, LBZ, and others)
The Duramax platform spans multiple generations with varying viscosity specifications. Most current Duramax engines specify 0W-20 or 5W-30 under GM dexosD. AMSOIL Signature Series 5W-30 Max-Duty meets GM dexosD and is the correct product for most current-generation Duramax trucks.
For older Duramax engines (LBZ, LML) running 15W-40 or 5W-40, AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty in those viscosities provides a direct upgrade with extended drain capability. For extreme cold-start situations in northern climates, the 0W-40 provides maximum startup protection.
Ford Powerstroke (6.7L, 6.4L, 7.3L)
The 6.7L Powerstroke is Ford's current diesel engine and one of the most common diesel trucks on the road. Ford specifies 10W-30 for the 6.7L in most conditions. AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty 10W-30 is the direct fit, matching Ford's specification while delivering 6X the wear protection of conventional diesel oil.
For 6.4L Powerstroke engines, which have a reputation for oil dilution and soot contamination issues, AMSOIL's superior dispersant package directly addresses those failure modes by keeping soot particles suspended and preventing them from clumping into wear-causing deposits.
Ram Cummins (6.7L, 5.9L)
The Cummins 6.7L is one of the most durable diesel engines built, and it responds well to extended drain intervals with quality synthetic oil. Ram typically specifies 15W-40 for the 6.7L Cummins, making AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty 15W-40 a direct fit.
For Cummins operators in cold climates or running the truck in winter conditions, the 5W-40 provides better cold-start protection while maintaining full operating temperature performance. The 0W-40 is the choice for extreme cold, particularly relevant for Cummins-powered trucks used in northern states, Canada, or high-altitude environments where overnight temperatures drop well below zero.
Don't Forget the Rest of the Drivetrain
Diesel trucks that tow or haul regularly put stress on every component in the drivetrain, not just the engine. Transmission fluid and differential gear oil degrade under the same load conditions that stress the engine oil, and neglected drivetrain fluid is one of the most common causes of expensive repairs in high-mileage diesel trucks.
Transmission: AMSOIL Signature Series Fuel Efficient Automatic Transmission Fluid for automatic-equipped diesel trucks. Manual-equipped trucks use AMSOIL Manual Synchromesh Transmission Fluid.
Front and rear differentials: AMSOIL Severe Gear Synthetic Gear Lube provides full synthetic protection for differentials operating under towing and hauling loads. Available in the viscosities required by GM, Ford, and Ram differentials.
Transfer case: AMSOIL Synthetic Multi-Vehicle ATF or the appropriate AMSOIL fluid for your specific transfer case. Transfer case fluid is commonly neglected and commonly degraded in trucks with significant towing history.

Extended Drain Intervals for Diesel Trucks
The drain interval for diesel trucks depends on the specific product, the engine, and how the truck is used.
AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty is formulated for extended drain capability. In normal service, extended intervals are achievable. In severe service, regular towing, hauling, commercial use, excessive idling, follow AMSOIL's severe service guidelines in the product data bulletin.
Diesel engines produce more soot contamination per mile than gasoline engines, which affects how quickly the oil's dispersant package is consumed. Trucks that tow heavy loads regularly, idle extensively, or operate in dusty environments should use oil analysis to determine the optimal drain interval for their specific conditions rather than relying on a fixed mileage target.
