Does AMSOIL Void My Warranty?

The Warranty Question Every AMSOIL Buyer Asks

The short answer: No. Using AMSOIL synthetic lubricants or practicing extended drain intervals does not void your new vehicle or equipment manufacturer warranty. This is not just AMSOIL's claim, it is federal law under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975.

This is one of the most common questions I hear from people considering AMSOIL for the first time. It is also one of the most common misconceptions perpetuated by dealerships and service centers, sometimes intentionally. I'm Ken Smith, owner of CleanEngine and an AMSOIL Authorized Independent Dealer since 2004. I'm Customer Certified, placing me in the top 6% of dealers nationwide. Here is the complete, honest answer.

The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act: What It Actually Says

In 1975, the United States Congress enacted the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (15 U.S.C. §2302(c)) specifically to protect consumers from deceptive warranty practices. The key provision states:

No warrantor of a consumer product may condition his written or implied warranty of such product on the consumer's using, in connection with such product, any article or service which is identified by brand, trade, or corporate name, unless the warrantor provides that article or service free of charge under the terms of the warranty.

In plain language: a vehicle manufacturer cannot require you to use their branded oil or parts to keep your warranty valid, unless they provide those products to you at no cost. Since no manufacturer provides free oil changes for the life of the vehicle, they cannot legally require you to use their branded lubricants.

The Federal Trade Commission enforces this law and has stated clearly: it is illegal for companies to void your warranty or deny coverage simply because you used an aftermarket product. The manufacturer or dealer must prove that the aftermarket product caused the specific failure before denying a warranty claim. They cannot deny coverage just because AMSOIL was in the engine.

What Dealerships Tell You, and Why

If you have ever taken a vehicle in for warranty service and been told that using AMSOIL or any non-OEM oil voids your warranty, you have been misled. This happens regularly. Here is why dealerships say it.

Warranty work pays dealerships less than standard repair work. The labor rate for warranty repairs is set by the manufacturer and is typically lower than the shop's standard rate. Some service advisors and technicians discourage warranty claims by citing oil brand as a disqualifying factor, not because it is true, but because it reduces the likelihood of a warranty claim they would rather not process.

This practice violates the Magnuson-Moss Act. If a dealership tells you in writing that using AMSOIL voids your warranty, AMSOIL's Technical Services and Legal Department wants to know about it. You can report it directly through AMSOIL's dealer support channels.

The correct response if a dealership makes this claim: ask them to put it in writing with the specific provision in your warranty agreement that requires manufacturer-branded lubricants. They will not provide it, because it does not exist.

What Actually Matters for Warranty Coverage

Your vehicle manufacturer does not specify a brand of oil. They specify a performance standard. Your owner's manual lists an API service category (SP, SN, CK-4, etc.) and a viscosity grade (0W-20, 5W-30, 15W-40, etc.). Any oil that meets those specifications, conventional or synthetic, any brand, is legally acceptable for warranty purposes.

AMSOIL synthetic lubricants meet or exceed every current API and OEM specification. AMSOIL Signature Series carries API SP certification. AMSOIL Max-Duty Synthetic Diesel Oil carries API CK-4 certification. AMSOIL V-Twin Motorcycle Oil is formulated for wet clutch compatibility. Every AMSOIL product is formulated to meet the manufacturer's required performance standards for the applications it covers.

The only scenario where a manufacturer could legitimately deny a warranty claim related to oil is if they can prove the oil caused the specific failure. Given that AMSOIL exceeds required performance standards rather than just meeting them, this scenario has not arisen in AMSOIL's history.

Extended Drain Intervals and Your Warranty

This is the second half of the question most people don't think to ask. Extending your oil change interval beyond the manufacturer's recommendation, even with AMSOIL, is a related but separate warranty concern.

The Magnuson-Moss Act covers this as well. A manufacturer cannot void your warranty based solely on your choice to extend drain intervals, provided the oil you are using is rated for those intervals, and you are following the oil manufacturer's published recommendations.

AMSOIL Signature Series is rated for up to 25,000 miles or one year in normal service, documented in the published product data bulletin (G2880). Following AMSOIL's published drain interval recommendations is following a manufacturer's recommendation, just AMSOIL's rather than the vehicle OEM's. This is legally protected under Magnuson-Moss.

Practically speaking: if you extend drain intervals and something fails, the burden of proof is on the manufacturer to demonstrate that the extended interval caused the failure, not that the failure happened to occur when you were on an extended interval. Given AMSOIL's published test data on oil quality maintenance over extended intervals, this is a difficult burden for any OEM to meet.

AMSOIL's Own Limited Warranty: An Additional Layer of Protection

Beyond the federal law protection, AMSOIL provides its own limited warranty for customers following AMSOIL recommendations. If you experience an engine failure that is determined to have been caused by an AMSOIL product used according to AMSOIL's published guidelines, AMSOIL will cover the repair.

This warranty requires documentation, a used oil sample submitted to AMSOIL for analysis, maintenance records showing AMSOIL use, and verification that the correct product and viscosity were used for the application. It is a genuine additional protection layer, not a marketing claim.

In over 50 years of operation, AMSOIL has not been found to have caused an engine failure. That track record reflects the product quality, not just the legal protection.

Specific Situations Where This Comes Up Most Often

New vehicle purchases. Dealerships sometimes pressure new vehicle buyers to use dealer oil changes to "protect the warranty." This is legally unsupported. Use AMSOIL in a new vehicle from day one and your warranty remains fully intact, provided you use the manufacturer-specified viscosity and API rating.

Turbocharged engines. Some performance vehicle manufacturers, particularly European brands, suggest their branded synthetic is required for turbocharged engines. The Magnuson-Moss Act applies equally here. AMSOIL Signature Series meets the required specifications for turbocharged applications and provides turbocharger protection 72% better than the GM dexos1 Gen 2 specification in independent testing.

Motorcycles and powersports. Harley-Davidson, Can-Am, Polaris, and other powersports manufacturers commonly pressure owners to use branded lubricants. The Magnuson-Moss Act covers powersports equipment. AMSOIL's motorcycle and powersports-specific products meet all required specifications for wet clutch, transmission, and primary chaincase applications.

Diesel trucks. Some diesel dealerships claim that using non-OEM oil voids powertrain warranty coverage. Ford, GM, and Ram cannot void your warranty for using AMSOIL Max-Duty Synthetic Diesel Oil in a Powerstroke, Duramax, or Cummins engine, provided the oil meets the manufacturer's required API and viscosity specifications, which AMSOIL does.

The Bottom Line

Using AMSOIL does not void your warranty. Federal law says so. The FTC enforces it. AMSOIL's own limited warranty adds protection layer on top of that.

If a dealership tells you otherwise, ask for the statement in writing. They will not provide it. Report it to AMSOIL Technical Services if they persist.

After 20 years of recommending AMSOIL to hundreds of customers across every vehicle type, new vehicles, diesel trucks, motorcycles, powersports equipment, classic cars. I have never seen a legitimate warranty denial based on AMSOIL use. The legal protection is real, the product quality is real, and the 50-year track record is real.
